I don’t talk much about my hobbies here, so this is one of those rare posts. I work a lot in the recording studio. Sometimes it can add up to 100 hours a week. As you can imagine sometimes it just gets to be too much, so I just need to take a break sometime. Once great reprieve I have found is in archery. I friend introduced me to it recently with his recurve bow and I just fell in love with it.
First of all, there is just the sheer peace of it. Once you start shooting, you will notice immediately that when you are lining up your shot everything else just seems to disappear. All of the noise – just everything. It is just you and the target. Once you take it seriously you need to make sure you have absolute focus when you are lining up your shot. It isn’t easy to do so for a beginner it will take a bit of practice to get up to speed. It took me a few weeks to really get going and come close to where I was trying to aim.
With this I found a lot of peace of mind. It ended up being a kind of meditation. With meditation you are trying to clear your mind, let thoughts come and and just let them go. With archery, you are just focused on your target in much of the same way. I have found that it has really helped with my peace of mind. It really helps when I get back into the studio and gives me a recharge so I can give it 100%.
So where should you start if you want to try? I suggest looking at a recurve bow comparison. There are a few options out there so it pays to know all of them. One of the biggest things will be to pick out the right draw weight for your bow. If you don’t have much upper body strength, you may need to start out with a lower draw weight until you build up enough strength with practice. Other then that there is the size of the bow. You will need to know your draw length to figure this out. Say your draw length is 30. In this case your bow size should be 60. You can extrapolate what yours should be based on this.
Hopefully I have given you enough information for you to get started with archery. It has really helped me out when I need to wind down, and I hope it helps you too if you decide to give it a try.
